Dr. Michael Scherer is an internationally recognized expert on dental implants, dentures, and digital technology and has published numerous articles in leading dental journals. He was also one of the 135,000 plus visitors at this year’s International Dental Show (IDS) in Cologne, Germany.
At IDS, Dr. Scherer took the time to create a video and a blog post on his demo of TRIOS 6 and its Dx Plus diagnostic software. He did not receive compensation for his video or post.
Here is his report:
Dr. Michael Scherer: When I attended the release of the new 3Shape TRIOS 6 intraoral scanner at the recent IDS, I quickly realized that this was more than just a hardware upgrade. The capabilities of this scanner went far beyond anything we’ve seen before.
The scanner and software provide groundbreaking tools for comparative analysis of previous dental scans. TRIOS 6 and TRIOS Dx Plus software isn’t just about scanning - it’s about leveraging artificial intelligence and cutting-edge analytics to better manage your patient care and improve outcomes.
At 3Shape’s IDS booth I was able to demo the scanner with my wife, Dr. Melissa Shotell volunteering as my patient. I logged into my 3Shape account and brought in some of Dr. Shotell’s older scans from my own TRIOS unit, taken years ago in my California practice.
With the new TRIOS 6 and software, I was able to compare these with the scans I took today. Importantly, with the newly released TRIOS DX Plus software, I could analyze changes to her oral condition over time with incredible precision.
As a scanner, one of the first things I noticed was how lightweight and comfortable TRIOS 6 felt in my hand. Compared to older models, it’s remarkably ergonomic, making scanning smoother and less fatiguing over long procedures.
3Shape TRIOS 6 also brings several notable improvements, including a 110% increase in scan accuracy compared to previous models. This means better data for clinicians and a more precise understanding of a patient’s oral health.
One of the most impressive additions is hyperspectral imaging, which integrates white, blue, and near-infrared light to enhance the scanner’s ability to detect areas of demineralization, gingival recession, occlusal wear, and potential areas of decay. The result? A highly advanced tool that not only captures high-quality images but also provides real-time analytics to guide treatment decisions.
The real magic of the TRIOS 6 lies in its upgraded scanning software. The latest TRIOS scanning applications showcased at IDS introduce an array of AI-driven features that make digital scanning and diagnostics more intuitive and efficient than ever before.
One of the coolest aspects of TRIOS 6 and TRIOS Dx Plus software is its ability to compare current scans with past scans seamlessly. With AI-generated adaptive measurements, we can track gingival recession, occlusal wear, and other dental changes over time. This feature is particularly useful for both restorative and orthodontic practices, as it provides a visual history of a patient’s dental progress.
But for me, one of the biggest game changes is how the new TRIOS system has been designed with patient communication in mind. For example, in my demo here, I was able to compare past and present scans of Dr. Shotell’s teeth, showing her subtle changes that might not be noticeable to the naked eye.
More importantly, the integration of AI-driven analysis now takes my patient diagnosis to a whole new level.
The scanner highlights potential areas of decay, represented as small yellow markers on the screen.
This feature allows clinicians to pinpoint high-risk areas before they become major concerns.
Perhaps one of the most exciting features of TRIOS 6 and TRIOS Dx Plus software is its ability to integrate with a patient’s smartphone. 3Shape’s DentalHealth app allows clinicians to send scan results directly to the patient, along with recommendations for oral hygiene improvement.
This enhances patient engagement and empowers them to take a more active role in their dental health. They can review scans and diagnostic information as well as get tips for oral care directly from their phone.
The TRIOS 6 and software is more than just a dental scanner—it’s an intelligent diagnostic tool that merges high-resolution imaging with powerful AI-driven analytics. With its hyperspectral imaging, ergonomic design, and seamless software integration, it provides an unparalleled level of accuracy and usability.
As technology continues to evolve, the ability to track and compare dental data over time will become an essential part of patient care. TRIOS 6 and TRIOS Dx Plus software set the stage for a future where AI-driven dentistry enhances diagnostics, streamlines workflows, and ultimately improves patient outcomes.
For dental professionals looking to stay ahead of the curve, TRIOS 6 is an investment worth considering. Its advanced features, combined with its ease of use, make it a must-have tool in modern dental practices.
Whether you’re a general dentist, specialist, or orthodontist, this scanner opens new doors to precision, efficiency, and improved patient education. The future of digital dentistry is here, and TRIOS 6 is leading the way!
