Receiving a parcel. Slowly unpacking it, with that feeling of suspense. We were very fortunate to have three leading practitioners from around the world film themselves doing the unboxing of a TRIOS 5 Wireless intraoral scanner for us, so you can be a part of their experience.

In the video, Doctors Simon Kold from Denmark, Anthony Mak from Australia, and Pamela Maragliano-Muniz from the United States, share their first impressions of the newly launched 3Shape dental scanner.

Let’s start with the box itself

The TRIOS 5 Wireless comes neatly packaged in an entirely new carrying box. A box that you will want to hold on to, according to Danish Dentist, Dr. Mona Thygesen.

Before watching the clips, let’s take a look at what you get with a TRIOS 5 Wireless intraoral scanner. The TRIOS 5 box includes:

  • The TRIOS 5 scanner
  • 5 scanner tips
  • A protection tip for the scanner
  • A pod / stand for placing the scanner in when not in use
  • 100 TRIOS single use protection sleeves for the scanner body
  • Battery charger with country-specific power cable
  • 3 batteries for the scanner
  • A wireless adapter
  • A USB dongle with software
  • A 3Shape subscription dongle

The size of the intraoral scanner

In this film clip, you’ll notice that all three doctors immediately recognize that TRIOS 5 is smaller and lighter than the rest of our scanner portfolio. Dr. Kold remarks that the new scanner feels like a pen and Dr. Maragliano-Muniz admires its ergonomics and comments how easy it is to hold and move in her fingertips.

TRIOS 5 is in fact 30% more compact than our previous models.

  • Weight – 10.6 oz incl. battery and scanner tip (300 gm with battery)
  • Length – 10.5 inches (26.6 cm)
  • Scanner height x width – 1.52 x 1.47 inches (3.85 x 3.74 cm)

Moreover, when we compare TRIOS 5 to some of the market’s other leading intraoral scanners, we find that some competitor models measure more than 13 inches in length and weigh 16.5 ounces or more.

That’s a significant difference for you and your team when using a dental scanner every day.

The design of the dental scanner

In this film excerpt, Dr. Maragliano-Muniz makes a point of highlighting TRIOS 5’s new scanner tips. She recognizes that the tip is now closed and instead, serves as microbial protection for the scanner.

TRIOS 5 tips no longer contain any electronics as with previous TRIOS scanner tips. The tip has a scratch-free sapphire glass window that the scan engine and camera housed in the scanner body use to peer through.

The tips are autoclavable up to 100 cycles.

All three practitioners notice the radical changes made to TRIOS 5’s design that make it more hygienic.

First off, we have removed all cracks and vaults from the body in which bacteria can build up. And because it now has super smooth surfaces, it makes cleaning and disinfecting TRIOS 5 with wipes quick and easy. TRIOS 5 is FDA cleared.

In addition, we include single-use sleeves with TRIOS 5. The clear plastic sleeves fit super snugly over the scanner’s body. You simply put one on and take it off like a rubber glove after scanning . It creates a barrier between the scanner and the user, so that you are never actually touching the scanner.

As Dr. Maragliano-Muniz remarks in the video, “From an infection control standpoint, this is awesome, a really cool innovation.”

TRIOS 5’s tip design and technology are also so radically different that because of them, you do not need to calibrate the scanner. Just imagine no more weekly calibration sessions for the team at your practice. You never need to calibrate TRIOS 5.

The batteries are new

All three doctors notice the new batteries on the TRIOS 5. These are redesigned as well. The batteries now include LED lights on them that indicate the battery’s charge level. In that way you always know how much power is left. Or when you are charging the battery, if it is filled up.

In addition, each battery now lasts sixty-six minutes. Which translates to twenty-two patients if you spend two minutes on each scan!

Another exciting addition is our new Smart Power Management that automatically switches TRIOS 5 into sleep-mode when not in use to save energy. The TRIOS 5 and battery can stay asleep for up to a week and then start right up when you are ready to scan.

The pod is hygienic too

The TRIOS 5’s base or pod that your scanner sits in when not in use is redesigned as well. As the doctors’ comment in the film, it is super-stable and allows you to place TRIOS 5 at multiple angles. And because of its super-smooth design, it is very easy to wipe down and disinfect.

As you and the global practitioners in this film can clearly see, TRIOS 5 is a completely new, state-of-the-art intraoral scanner designed to make it easier than ever for you to go digital with your dentistry.

We would love for you to get your hands on a TRIOS 5 and tell us what you think. Please go to a dental show and try one out and share your thoughts with us.

Dr. Simon Kold

We hope that when you get your hands on a TRIOS 5, you are as excited as Dr. Kold when he says: “Christmas came early this year.”
