The smallest and lightest of the 3Shape family of scanners, TRIOS 5 offers effortless, accurate, and wireless scanning for a smooth, efficient digital workflow.
Shortly after acquiring Accent Smiles Dentistry in Round Rock, TX, from a retiring dentist, Dr. AJ Bhangu embarked on his long-held goal of creating a fully digital practice.
The first step?
Purchasing the new TRIOS 5 intraoral scanner and 3Shape Unite cloud-based software. Now, his patients welcome seeing their scans on a screen and he’s seen an uptick in treatment acceptance as a result of bringing intraoral scanning into his workflow. Here, he discusses more ways that TRIOS 5 has jumpstarted his treatment conversations and patient care. When I first began practicing, the offices I worked in all had scanners, so I was able to try out a good number of them.
I got to see what I liked and didn’t like about each model. I always knew that I would have my own practice one day, and when I did, my intention was to have a digital workflow. Two years ago I finally bought my own practice, and one of my first orders of business was purchasing an intraoral scanner. The TRIOS 5 had recently been introduced, and I knew it was the scanner I wanted. Why?It’s wireless. I just move it from one operatory to the next.
It’s also easy to use, and the scans are very precise.
TRIOS 5 was a big change for us because the current patients—some who have been with the practice for over 20 years—were used to traditional impression materials.
Patient perception is very important when upgrading technologies, and these patients who were new to me had to get used to something that was very different from what they had known for so many years. But I wasn’t worried.
When it comes to big investments in my practice, I like to cover all the bases, and I regard the TRIOS 5 as “future proof” since it’s new and packed with the latest technology
TRIOS 5 is very intuitive, and scanning takes less than a minute. On the techni-cal side of things, getting an accurate scan and bite registration—and being able to quickly send them to the lab—has cut down on costs, decreased turn-around time, and opened the door to other avenues of digital dentistry, such as 3D printing
The best features for me are the accuracy, the colorization of the scans, and the color matching. Pictures are a much easier way to explain to patients what’s happening in their mouths, and it’s an easy selling point! I can let the screen do the talking.
Plus, patients don’t have to worry about gagging, and it’s much less of a hurdle to get them to accept treatment, so productivity also has increased. We’ve definitely turned cases into treatments as a result of using TRIOS 5.
3Shape Unite stores everything in the cloud, which is very convenient because I can access patient information from anywhere, at any time.
Often, my communication with the lab takes place when I’m out of the office, and if the lab needs me to check a margin, I can pull it up and discuss the case with the images right in front of me. If the software was cumbersome, we wouldn’t be having as much success as we’re seeing.
With some technology, once you have it, you can’t imagine doing dentistry without it. That’s TRIOS 5!
