Two clinicians share how 3Shape’s TRIOS increased their accuracy and workflow efficiency, while also promoting more confident diagnoses and increased treatment acceptance.
No matter how big or small, every journey begins with the first step. In the case of a digital workflow, that first step for many dentists is the purchase of an intraoral scanner. And even though Alan Pressman, DMD, and Derek Draft, DDS, DABFO, practice in 2 different countries, their digital journey began with 1 product: the 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner. Both dentists purchased their TRIOS scanner several years ago, and today, neither can imagine a workflow without it.
“I’ve had my TRIOS for almost a decade now, and back then, my lab was already using some of the TRIOS technology and recommended that I look into the TRIOS scanner, and so we decided to invest in that,” shared Dr. Draft, who practices in Grandville, MI, and Quebec, Canada. “From the start, the learning curve was relatively easy, the software was intuitive, and my staff and I found it easy to use. Everyone just jumped on board!” Dr. Pressman, who practices in Spring Valley, NY, shares a similar experience about how his digital journey began with TRIOS.
“I had worked in a practice that had a scanner, but it required a powder spray to be applied to the teeth before scanning, and I found it difficult to use,” he shared. “A few years later, I was taking a course at a conference where there was a demo of the TRIOS. I bought it right there at the conference!”
For both clinicians, the value of the TRIOS intraoral scanner can best be described with 2 words: speed and accuracy. And both agree that especially in today’s hectic dental workflows, those 2 characteristics can be the deciding factors between a practice that provides confident diagnostics along with fast, predictable, and durable restorations, and one that can claim none of the above.
“The TRIOS is amazing,” shared Dr. Pressman. “Whenever I use it to take an impression for a crown, my margins are right on, and I could never say that when I used traditional impression material. With that method, I always had to adjust it and it could take up to 40 minutes to seat a crown. With the TRIOS, it’s less than 10 minutes and the accuracy is incredible—it’s spot on!”

It's a sentiment echoed by Dr. Draft, who points to an increased level of confidence in his diagnoses that he believes transfers to patients as well. “Using TRIOS makes me more confident in the quality of my preparations for my crowns and other restorative procedures,” he shared, “because it allows me to visualize everything on the computer before I begin, and I believe my patients also have more confidence in my diagnoses, as well.
Patients seem to like that their dentist uses newer technology in their treatment.” In addition to speed and accuracy, both dentists said patient comfort is a definite plus with the TRIOS, since it eliminates the messy trays so many patients find difficult and uncomfortable to manage during traditional impressions, along with significantly less chance of gagging.
“Patients love it because I don’t have to put gooey impression material in their mouth, so it’s a plus for them because it’s more comfortable and easier to navigate,” Dr. Draft said. “It’s a lot more accurate, faster, and easier for me and for patients, with less chance of gagging and a more relaxed appointment overall,” added Dr. Pressman. And, while innovative technology is always an investment, Dr. Pressman believes it’s a worthwhile expense.
“I can’t imagine it being any more money in the long run than the price of purchasing impression materials, trays, and adhesive, which is significant,” he explained. “Plus, I’ve eliminated the time that’s spent in sending out impressions to the lab.” “For me, in my practice, it was less about cost and more about improving patient comfort and increasing the quality of my dentistry with more accurate diagnoses,” added Dr. Draft
