But before we walk you through what you need to know about the program:
What exactly is it you need to learn about intraoral scanning?
As we mentioned previously, it depends on where you’re starting from . Besides the technical how-to about intraoral scanners, you may also need to shift your mindset.
And when we say “you”, it is not just you, dear reader, but also the rest of your team. Everybody involved needs to understand, and be fully invested in, this new way of performing dentistry. New culture, new language, new protocols—and everybody needs to be onboard.
In essence, you need to learn:
- The technology and components of the scanner. Including how to properly set it up and maintain it.
- The software you will use to operate the scanner. Including how to navigate and use the different features.
- The proper strategy for capturing digital impressions within your treatment protocols. Including how to position the scanner tip and control the movement of the scanner to ensure complete coverage of the oral cavity.
- How to interpret the digital impression data. Including identifying areas that may require additional scanning or refinement.
- How this whole ecosystem of technology fits together into one high-performance machine. The 3Shape platform—Unite— brings with it an app store where you integrate dental laboratories, design centers, patient management systems and of course the 3Shape apps you choose, such as TRIOS Design Studio, Implant Studio, Splint Studio and Clear Aligner Studio.

Welcome to the 3Shape TRIOS Onboarding Program
The moment you open the box with your brand new TRIOS, your goal is to: As quickly as possible, without sacrificing too much valuable time with your patients, make the technology a natural part of your team’s everyday work.
Our TRIOS onboarding program IS the fastest and most comfortable way to achieve that goal. Over a period of approximately three months, depending on your needs and preferences, you will be able to fully integrate your 3Shape TRIOS into your practice, and reap the full benefits from it.
What the program is
For three months, or rather “the first 100 days”, at no cost to you at all, our experts will get you started, train your team, answer your questions and generally make sure you are able to confidently use your TRIOS scanner, and all surrounding technology, in your workflows.
Using online tools for maximum flexibility, we will work around your schedule, ensuring your time with patients doesn’t suffer, and that you and your team aren’t overburdened.
It is a unique opportunity that saves you time and effort, and ensures your whole team gets behind this new technology. In other words, the shortest and most pain-free route from beginner to competent and confident user.
How it works
Your journey will look different if you are a “tech savvy” person or practice, compared to if you are less so. Dental practitioners are all different, and adopting new technology comes quick to some, and takes a bit longer for others. And that is fine—we simply adjust our program to where you are.
A typical journey for a doctor or practice that participates in the onboarding program looks like this:
1. Installation session
Once you place your order and receive your scanner, you scan a QR code in your box, which takes you to detailed instructions on how to assemble your scanner.
One of our customer success managers reaches out to you, and on a 90-minute call with them, you will learn a bit about the way forward during your first three months, and how to learn as fast and effectively as possible.
The laptop computer you have received comes pre-installed, so all you have to do is start it up. During the call, your dedicated customer success manager will:
- connect via remote access and explain exactly how to open and start using the 3Shape TRIOS software
- make sure your scanner is connected and properly set up so that you are ready to start using it
- show you the basics of how to scan and how to create patients in the system
- provide instructions on how to clean the scanner and provide maintenance
2. Hands-on intraoral scanner training
This training can take place on the same day as the installation session (we don’t recommend that since it takes too much time away from your patients), or any other time that is convenient.
You will practice, hands-on, how to take and use scans. The session takes three hours, but typically our customers prefer to split this training into two separate hour-and-a-half sessions. After all, three hours is a long time away from patients. And as we said right in the beginning: we adjust to your needs.
During this online/virtual session or sessions, we explain:
3. Follow-up session on intraoral scanner training
We recommend that you use the scanner for a couple of weeks or even months before this session. Send a few cases to the lab and see how it works for you and the team.
Depending on how you are getting along, in this session we’ll check in on you and make sure you don’t have any issues with your scanning. The time we spend together depends on how things are going, but it typically takes around an hour and a half.
During that time we will:
- recap what we went through in the hands-on dental scanner training session. There was, after all, a lot of new information for you at the time, and now you have some more context.
- go through any questions, doubts or other issues you may have encountered. We are deeply invested in your success using our system and want to make sure everything is crystal clear to you and your team.
- show you how to use the patient engagement apps, which are great tools for keeping your patients happy.
4. Regular check-ins
If you want to, and at intervals agreed with you, we will place check-in calls to make sure everything is working the way you want it to. If you encountered any problems, we could agree to check in within a few days. Or our calls could be monthly—whatever works for you.
After the three months
This is where the official onboarding program ends. We will place a final call with you and make sure you don’t have any problems. After this, you will receive a digital certificate acknowledging that you have completed the official 3Shape TRIOS onboarding program.
But even though that’s the end of the program, we don’t simply leave you to fend for yourself. If you ever encounter any problems, we hope that you reach out to 3Shape Support so that we can help you. And if you feel you need another training session, we will happily deliver one.
